Drinking in Parks

At OneCity, we don’t think that bringing a growler or bottle of wine with you to the park should be illegal. Our volunteers have been out in parks with a petition to end the restriction on drinking in Vancouver parks and the response has been overwhelmingly supportive.

Housing is expensive in this city and Vancouver’s parks have become our backyards and meeting places. Our parks and beaches are regularly filled with people enjoying picnics, snacks and time outside. We believe that allowing adults to have a drink, along with food, in public parks should be permitted. It's time to end the fear of fines for this regular social practice.

Hundreds of fines are given out each year by enforcement officers and low income and racialized communities are disproportionately targeted. These drinking fines are flat taxes that negatively impact lower income communities the hardest. Our City's bylaw enforcement resources could be better directed elsewhere. Current laws about public intoxication and litter will be maintained.

ONECITY WILL WORK TO ALLOW DRINKING IN VANCOUVER PARKS BY:

  • Introducing a motion calling for legalized drinking in all public parks and beaches in Vancouver.
