VANCOUVER-- In a packed meeting last night the Vancouver and District Labour Council (VDLC) voted to endorse all three OneCity candidates for the upcoming city by-election.
OneCity candidates - Judy Graves for City Council and Erica Jaaf and Carrie Bercic for School Board – are proud but humbled to have won the support of Vancouver’s labour community.
The VDLC represents 110 union locals and has a total membership of about 60,000 trade unionists.
“I want to express my deep appreciation to the VDLC,” says Graves. “We are proud of having built strong relationships with Vancouver’s workers and their organizations and are honoured by their support.”
OneCity’s two School Board candidates also expressed their gratitude. “Labour unions hold a very special place in my heart, and I'm deeply honoured,” says Carrie Bercic, with Erica Jaff adding “we appreciate the support of working people in our community.”
“The trade union movement has reminded us again and again that people who work in Vancouver should be able to live in Vancouver,” says Graves. “That’s gotten harder and harder over the last two decades. We aim to change that.”
Graves says OneCity’s campaign for affordable housing, inclusive communities, strong neighbourhood schools – and for a fairer and more compassionate Vancouver is a good fit with the Labour communities’ values.
