About us
OneCity is a progressive political party in the City of Vancouver that has championed causes of affordable housing, climate action, neighbourhood public schools and serving the educational needs of every child, access to childcare, equity and inclusion, active and public transportation, Indigenous justice, the expansion of affordable arts and culture spaces, 2SLGBTQ+ rights, and taking action to address the toxic drug crisis. In 2022, OneCity elected candidates to Vancouver City Council and the Vancouver School Board, and the party seeks to win majorities on those bodies and elect a progressive mayor in 2026.
About the role
The Executive Director (ED) will take on a significant role in directing the day-to-day work and the implementation of mid-range strategic goals of the party. The ideal candidate has experience working in the complexity of a volunteer-based political organization, can maintain focus on big picture goals, and is capable of working in tandem with as well as taking direction from a volunteer Board of Directors. The position requires scheduling adaptability, as many committees and volunteers meet outside of conventional working hours, often on evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
The ED will work with the Board of Directors to coordinate all activities of the organization through and possibly beyond the October 2026 municipal elections. The role involves working closely with the party’s many committees, caucuses and neighbourhood teams to build their capacity and effectiveness. The ED will also take on a significant role in the organization’s fundraising, communications, and outreach, and will have some administrative tasks.
- Resource all committees and caucuses to support their work and enhance their effectiveness
- Provide strategic support to the party’s caucuses (Education, Council, Labour)
- Support event planning
- Identify new volunteers and channel them into organizational roles
- Co-chair the Fundraising Committee
- Co-develop and execute the fundraising plan
- Coordinate major donor program and maintain relationships
- Draft content for fundraising messages
- Work with Communications Committee to implement strategic communications plan
- Support letter-writing campaigns and petitions
- Draft copy for and review press releases, social media posts, ads, and messages to supporters
- Work with digital vendor to program communications and event pages
- Maintain an up-to-date media list with reporters and influencers
- Execute targeted outreach to groups and communities
- Support the organization’s Board of Directors and the Executive Committee
- Identify additional staffing needs and coordinate hires with the Executive Committee
- Respond to and process incoming email messages
- Update member and donor records
Requirements
- Knowledge of local municipal politics and electoral campaigning
- Background in leadership roles for non-governmental organizations, including working with a volunteer Board of Directors, committees and volunteers
- Experience developing and implementing fundraising campaigns, including major donor relations, email appeals, and income-generating events
- Experience working collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures and identities
- Familiarity with common digital platforms and tools such as NationBuilder, New/Mode, Canva and QuickBooks
