Vancouver School Board: Do not sell School Board lands, keep them public

Trustee Jennifer Reddy's motion to the Vancouver School Board to keep public land public, and not sell or privatize any School Board land, will be brought forward to the Vancouver School Board on January 25th. Here are her reasons for bringing forward the motion:

First, it is our responsibility as school trustees to act as stewards for school land, which is unceded xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory, and hold it in trust for all children. Second, given the scale of Vancouver's housing crisis, this land has the potential to be redeveloped into affordable housing and other public goods, generate long-term income for the cash-strapped School Board, and address the persistent underfunding of public education. Third, the Long Range Facilities Plan consultation process which engaged over 4,000 individuals shows that the public does not support the sale of Vancouver School Board land. I believe it is our responsibility to keep all public land public, and and not to sell pieces or portions, whether or not they are currently used for schools.

Please make your voice heard by signing this petition so you can tell the Vancouver School Board that you support Trustee Reddy’s motion - that you do not support the sale of School Board lands that it holds in its trust, and that those lands must be kept public.

Also, please write to the school trustees to tell them that you support this motion. You can email them directly.

I support Vancouver School Board Trustee Jennifer Reddy’s motion to the Vancouver School Board of Education to not dispose of any of its land by sale or transfer. School Board lands must remain public.
