VANCOUVER, B.C. on the Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh – Iona Bonamis 陶思穎, Council Candidate for OneCity Vancouver, today issued the following statement following the historic Provincial Court decision to allow her usual name designation on the ballot and that of OneCity school board candidate Christopher Lee 李基鵬.
"This was never really about me, or about Christopher. Nearly one in five Vancouverites is of Chinese descent. Many of us have carried both names our whole lives, because that is what it means to be a proud Vancouverite and a proud Canadian.
This same electoral office challenged my name in 2022 and it challenged Brandon Yan's in 2018. Now I get to spend the next four weeks doing what Vancouverites expect of me as a City Council Candidate: knocking on doors and talking with neighbours about rent they can afford, childcare in every neighbourhood, and making the traffic suck less. That’s what I, and our OneCity team, are in this for."
