Vancouver is a beautiful city built between the Salish Sea and the Coast Mountains, but more than a third of our city is covered in blacktop, and our trees, parks, and green spaces are withering under ABC austerity. As a coastal city, we are also more vulnerable to the changing climate than many communities.
OneCity will increase our green spaces and tree cover and steward our ecosystem alongside a growing and flourishing city.
ReWild Vancouver – OneCity will increase park land, grow urban meadows, and resurface buried creek systems for greater access to green, wild spaces in the city.
Increase the Tree Canopy Target to 40% – OneCity will update the Urban Forest Strategy to expand access to leafy streets and the accompanying ecological resiliency.
Sustain the Park Board – OneCity will build Park Board revenue through no-and low-cost tools with a long-term strategy to increase the independence and resiliency of the Park Board, so that the board can do what it was elected to do: protect our parks.
OneCity will also build a sustainable city that’s resilient to the increasingly volatile climate and energy sector by making it easier to choose green energy and protecting vulnerable residents from extreme weather.
Heat Pump Cost Reductions – OneCity will make it easier and cheaper to choose the greenest energy options for your home.
Direct Install Cooling Program – OneCity will directly install cooling, air filtration, and heat pumps in the homes of Vancouver's highest-risk residents, so extreme heat events don’t become fatal for our most vulnerable.
A City for Solar Power – OneCity will institute a Public Rooftop Solar and Community Energy Program putting solar panels on schools, libraries, and community centres, so renters, co-ops, and non-profits without a roof of their own can access clean energy.
Restore Climate Leadership in Buildings – OneCity will restore the climate leadership in construction that was slashed by ABC, making our buildings more future-proof and energy-efficient. 96% of Vancouver builders had adopted this standard at repeal.
Clean Energy for Vancouver Buildings – OneCity will initiate a comprehensive program including topped-up solar and battery incentives, restored replacement requirements for aging gas equipment, a low-income retrofit program, and expanded thermal energy networks so everyone has access to cheaper, greener energy.
Clean, Cool Air & Safe Spaces – OneCity will initiate a plan to bring every City, Park Board, and school facility in Vancouver up to one shared standard for air quality and temperature control to protect residents from wildfire smoke and seasonal illness.
Regulate & Report on Intensive Land Use – OneCity will require resource-intensive land and energy users to disclose and mitigate their impacts to public infrastructure, including data centres, surface parking lots, and large luxury homes.
Prioritizing Seismic Preparedness – OneCity will prioritize creating a building risk inventory, as well as seismic retrofits of community centres, and consider upgrading the seismic standards for post-disaster infrastructure.
