Vancouver chose change: OneCity re-elects Lucy Maloney, triples its School Board team, and welcomes a progressive City Hall

VANCOUVER, BC (unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ Nations) – Vancouver voted for change on Saturday, and OneCity is proud to have helped deliver it.

Preliminary results from the City of Vancouver show Pete Fry elected Mayor, progressive candidates winning nine of ten seats on City Council, all seven seats on the Park Board, and all nine seats on the Vancouver School Board. Voter turnout was more than 43 per cent, up from 36 per cent in 2022. That is the clearest message this city has sent in a generation: Vancouverites want a government that works for them and their families — not big money backers.

OneCity's Lucy Maloney was re-elected to City Council, and OneCity's presence on the School Board grew from one trustee to three with the election of Krista Sigurdson, Rory Brown, and Steve Cardwell.

OneCity congratulates Mayor-elect Fry and every candidate elected on Saturday, and recognizes Mayor Ken Sim and the outgoing ABC councillors, commissioners, and trustees for their time in public service.

We had hoped to elect a larger cohort of our spectacular candidates. Our Council and Park Board candidates ran principled, policy-rich campaigns focussed on faster transit, growing co-op housing, protecting the environment, safer streets and better parks for every neighbourhood, and they earned the trust of tens of thousands of voters. Their ideas belong to the people of this city now, and OneCity will keep pushing to accomplish real progress.

Our new progressive City Council
Councillor Maloney returns to City Hall where she can support and be supported with progressive policies that our neighbours desperately want.

“Thank you, Vancouver. I'm grateful to be re-elected, and I'm even more grateful for what this council will be able to do together. For eighteen months I have worked to advance road safety, affordable housing, and climate policy, only to be blocked at every turn by Mayor Sim and ABC. That looks very different now,” said returning OneCity Councillor Lucy Maloney.

"Mayor-elect Fry, COPE, the Greens and OneCity share many of the same priorities, especially the creation of more affordable homes, including on land the public already owns; streets that are safe whether you walk, bike, roll or drive; and childcare spaces families can actually find close to where they live. I'm glad to be part of this progressive cohort and excited about what we're going to deliver for Vancouverites."

New leadership for our public schools
Vancouverites elected leaders to the School Board on a mandate to protect and invest in our public schools. OneCity's three new trustees include an experienced PAC chair, a teacher, and a former district superintendent.

"I ran for trustee because I spent years as a PAC chair watching parents fight for basic dignities. I’m heartened that Vancouverites elected trustees who will put students, families, and workers first,” said Krista Sigurdson, OneCity School Board Trustee-elect.

"With OneCity at the School Board, Vancouverites can be assured that Rory, Steve, and I will work with our fellow progressives to protect school lands and put resources back into our classrooms. We can’t wait to get to work.”

What comes next
OneCity, COPE, and the Greens all limited their candidates under the Progressive Unity Agreement, and OneCity intends to govern with the same approach. Our three parties share core values that voters overwhelmingly endorsed this election:

  • Affordable housing, including homes on public land, kept affordable for our shared future.

  • Safe, active transit corridors, so walking, rolling, or bussing is safe and easy.

  • Childcare, planned into new housing and new schools instead of bolted on afterwards.

  • Protecting school lands, so public land serves kids and families rather than being sold off.

But no progressive change would have been possible without the thousands of donors and volunteers and party members who worked late nights, contributed what they could, and dreamed of a more just, equitable Vancouver. To everyone, from all parties, who worked towards this outcome: thank you.
