Broadway for People

The opening of the Broadway Subway creates an incredible opportunity to create a Better Broadway, with fewer cars, and more space for people to move and gather.

On June 9, 2022 Vancouver Council overwhelmingly approved OneCity Councillor Christine Boyle's amendment to make a #BroadwayForPeople.

Here's Christine's final amendment, as passed:

THAT Council commit to a future for the street of Broadway that increases safety and livability for families, seniors, and people with disabilities and decreases carbon emissions. And do so by reallocating surface road space to prioritize pedestrians, buses, access for people with disabilities, safe active transportation and micro-mobility, emergency vehicles, public space, and the movement of goods. And deprioritizing personal private vehicles.

FURTHER THAT Council commit to building a AAA safe active transportation lane along Broadway.

FURTHER THAT Council direct staff to review, analyze and report back on recommended designs and funding sources for meeting the above goals.

The Broadway Plan is an opportunity to further shift our transportation system to reduce emissions and create safer, healthier, and more livable public spaces for seniors, kids and families, and people with disabilities.

  • A Broadway with more space for people to move and gather.
  • A Broadway that encourages people to spend an afternoon browsing through local businesses.
  • A Broadway that creates cleaner air for everyone who lives and works in the area.
  • A Broadway with wider sidewalks, and raised crosswalks and curb bulges for safer street crossings.
  • A Broadway with more parklets,  benches, street trees, and public spaces for people to relax and connect with their friends and neighbours.
  • A Broadway with safe and efficient active transportation lanes which travel through, rather than adjacent to or around neighbourhoods and commercial districts, increasing accessibility to businesses, public spaces, schools, and childcare.

By passing this motion, we proved that our government can do important work to help decrease emissions and make life safer and healthier for all of us.

Our challenges are daunting and much work remains. Imagine what we can do if we stay united and add three new OneCity Councillors alongside Christine Boyle!
