OneCity Vancouver updates platform for 2025 by-election

VANCOUVER (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Territories) - OneCity Vancouver has updated its platform for the 2025 by-election, laying out the party’s immediate priorities should their candidate Lucy Maloney be elected - and also the principles that they believe will build a healthy, equitable, and just city for everyone.

Immediate priorities include:

  • Bringing back the Vancouver Renter Office, killed by Ken Sim, and endowing it with a mandate to enforce Vancouver’s tenant protections.

  • Extending the Broadway Plan renter protections across the City.

  • Directing staff to implement road and pedestrian safety improvements throughout Vancouver, including sidewalk repair and completion, curb cuts, and reducing speed limits around schools.

  • New express buses where they are badly-needed, on streets like 49th, Marine and King Edward.

  • Properly funded libraries with sufficient resources to ensure a safe workplace and that are able to open for longer hours.

“Ken Sim has broken so many promises, so Vancouverites deserve to know where I stand on the issues that matter to them,” said Lucy Maloney, City Council candidate, OneCity Vancouver. “Our platform is a plan to make improvements in the short term, and build a city founded on equity, sustainability, reconciliation and fairness in the long term.”

The platform can be viewed online.

What they’re saying about Lucy Maloney’s platform:

Housing

"Vancouver has lots of jobs, but extreme restrictions on housing supply, resulting in sky-high prices and rents. It’s like pushing down on a balloon: whenever the city allows more housing to be built in a particular place, like the Broadway corridor, there’s tremendous pressure for redevelopment. Long-time tenants in old rental housing are extremely vulnerable. I’m glad to see that OneCity has solid, practical ideas to enforce tenant protection policies, and to allow more housing across the city, reducing the pressure on any one spot."

Russil Wvong, Vancouver Area Neighbours Association

“Vancouver suffers from a dire shortage of housing, but as we build, we need to ensure that tenants, especially vulnerable tenants, are protected. Lucy Maloney understands that we must both fix onerous municipal processes and requirements and ensure that people's rights are respected and protected, and that they are not displaced. This is the way to solve the housing crisis: more homes, of all kinds, faster, leaving no one behind.”

Helen Lui, housing and community builder

Public Safety

"Everyone is safer when the right agency responds to each emergency, and when people have the care, supports and housing they need. In New Westminster, we've seen PACT respond to thousands of crisis calls, supporting people in crisis and allowing police to focus their efforts elsewhere, creating a safer city for everyone. It is a model every municipality could adopt - they simply work."

Patrick Johnstone, Mayor of New Westminster

Transportation

“At Vision Zero Vancouver, our sole focus is ending fatalities and serious injuries from car crashes. The evidence is clear on what works: more access to safe options—particularly transit, cycling infrastructure that protects all road users and consistent enforcement, such as speed and red light cameras. Lucy has been an unwavering champion for safer streets. That's why we're thrilled to endorse her.”

Rhiannon Fox, Vision Zero Vancouver

"Buses, especially in South Vancouver, are so full that they're leaving people behind. We need way more transit: We need our bus network to be fast, reliable, and to have way more capacity. In addition, though, we need new routes, more bus lanes, more shelters, and safer crosswalks. We're calling on candidates to take the needs of transit riders seriously."

Denis Agar, Executive Director, Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders

Climate Action

“We need to elect Lucy Maloney to city council, to protect and advance Vancouver's Climate Emergency Action Plan. If Ken Sim wins more seats he's going to re-introduce fossil fuel heating to new buildings, reversing an essential Vancouver climate policy win that has been a beacon to the rest of the country.”

Seth Klein, author of "A Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency"

Strong Community Services

"For Vancouver to be a place to thrive, we need well-funded community centres and public spaces. That starts with a properly-funded, independent, elected Park Board. I am glad to see that Lucy supports our elected Park Board, and that she's committed to creating excellent parks and public spaces where we can gather together."

Libby Davies, former Vancouver Park Board commissioner, speaking to OneCity’s support for an elected Park Board
