Flagging housing starts and a weakening economy demand new leadership at City Hall

VANCOUVER, B.C. on the Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh –

Housing starts in Vancouver are down 42%. The biggest driver of good jobs and economic growth in our city is stalled out – and that means fewer homes for families, elders, and newcomers will be built.

Vancouver is the engine of British Columbia’s economy, and ABC has neglected their responsibility to lead the province in sustainable growth in favour of asking big private developers to ‘just handle it’. We’ve seen it with Wesgroup failing to build a community centre in the River District, and Holborn abandoning affordable homes in Little Mountain – this pattern is hollowing out our city. City Hall must step up where big developers can’t or won’t.

When home building slows, families are squeezed out, and the door is locked on newcomers who seek a voice, a place, and a future in Vancouver. With our plan to build 4,000 affordable homes with a public People’s Builder, we will make sure there is good, affordable housing for our neighbours – today, and tomorrow – no matter how unstable the economic climate is.

ABC has proven they don’t have the experience or courage to lead Vancouver and British Columbia through economic uncertainty. ABC instead picks fights with the senior governments that fund the kind of new housing Vancouverites desperately need.

As your next Mayor and progressive government, I and our OneCity team will make Vancouver a city that the provincial and federal governments want to invest in by showing a clear plan for growing our economy, increasing affordable housing options, and building our community infrastructure.

I’ve built hundreds of affordable homes in the middle of a housing crisis and led $4.3 billion dollars of community investment in neighbourhoods across Vancouver. I know what it takes to build the homes people need and how to deliver life-changing investments for our communities. In the coming weeks, with our OneCity team, I will announce our plan to build the parks, pools, pipes, and homes Vancouver deserves.”
