Parent, advocate and Downtown Vancouver resident to run with civic party, promising to pressure ABC to create a Tenant Advocacy Office with her first motion
VANCOUVER (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Territories) — Lucy Maloney, a road safety advocate from Downtown Vancouver, will run with OneCity Vancouver in the 2025 Vancouver municipal by-election.
She is a champion for a Vancouver that is safe, healthy and affordable - a place where people can build families and good lives.
Vancouver is Lucy Maloney’s chosen home - and after moving to Canada, her family settled in a West End rental apartment, across the street from her children’s public school. But after their landlord refused to renew their lease to renovate, but rented the apartment out as an AirBNB, they had to move far away from their school.
So she started to bike with her children to school - and discovered that in Vancouver, just like not all people have stable homes, not all commutes are safe.
“Being renovicted, and starting to cycle with my children, really brought home just how much the decisions made by the Mayor and Council affect our lives,” said Lucy Maloney. “If we want a city where people have affordable housing and safe streets, we need leaders who are ready to listen.”
The leader Vancouver needs
Discovering Vancouver’s dicey streets and difficult housing market drove Lucy to fight for her kids - to build a stronger, more affordable Vancouver where they could have a future.
Before deciding to focus on her family, she had earned a law degree and an MBA, and pursued a career in environmental law with her Australian state’s environmental regulator, and then in business. So she took the drive and energy with which she’d pursued her career and dedicated herself to making her community stronger.
As Chair of the Lord Roberts Elementary School Parent Advisory Council, she fought to have traffic calming infrastructure installed so children could walk, ride and roll to school safely - and won. And as the Active Transport/Safe Routes Lead for the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council, she’s working with other parents to make kids safer city-wide.
She also fights for safe streets for everyone who walks, rolls, drives or takes transit with Vision Zero Vancouver.
“In Vancouver, the city decides whether you have stable housing, get to work on time and come home safely each night - or whether you don’t,” continued Maloney. “Our city needs serious leaders working to solve serious problems. And Ken Sim isn’t working for you.”
Ken Sim: He’s not working for you
After two and a half years under Ken Sim, Vancouver feels stretched. Rent is still too high. Homelessness is up by 16% since the last homeless count. And the poisoned drug crisis continues to kill our neighbours at an alarming rate.
Amid these crises, where is Vancouver’s mayor?
Ken Sim barely shows up for work. When he does bother to show up, it’s not to make life better or easier for you - it’s to make damaging decisions that no one asked for, from cancelling all new supportive housing in Vancouver to demolishing badly-needed modular housing for those at risk of homelessness.
And those 100 nurses? We got 12.
We can build a joyful, affordable, sustainable shared home. To do it, we need progressive leaders who are ready to press Ken Sim on the issues that matter.
Fighting for tenants
Ken Sim isn’t working for you. But Lucy Maloney is ready to get to work on Day One - fighting for homes you can afford, rental protections you can trust, and safe streets and communities.
If she earns the trust of Vancouver’s voters, as her very first motion, she will move to resurrect the Vancouver Renter Office - killed by Ken Sim - as a Tenant Advocacy Office. To advocate for tenants within the municipal government, and to be specifically charged with enforcing Vancouver’s tenant protections.
“I know what it’s like to be forced out of your home. Vancouver has some of the world’s leading tenant protections, but under Ken Sim, enforcement of those protections is confusing and unclear. Tenants don’t have faith in the city,” said Maloney. “Renters deserve to have someone in their corner. And I am ready to fight for tenants, for workers, for young people, and for everyone who wants a safe, affordable and healthy city - on day one.”
With Lucy at the table, we can fight back - and we can win.
