Statement from Lucy Maloney

OneCity Vancouver candidate Lucy Maloney on Mayor Sim's announcement

“I live in Vancouver’s urban core and I understand the concerns my neighbours have, because I share them. Downtown is the place where my kids hang out, go to shops and take transit to see their friends. People who live and work downtown, and in the rest of the city, deserve to be safe from violence. When violent crimes occur, and when organized crime targets the vulnerable, the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Ken Sim was elected on a promise to balance enforcement with prevention. We all remember it: 100 police officers, 100 nurses.

At today’s press conference, Ken Sim claimed to have a great track record of allocating resources. Per him, ‘the proof is in the pudding’.

Here are the facts: we were promised 100 nurses. As of late 2024, we had 12 - with a target of 14. He has had years to keep his promises, and he’s broken them.

Building a safer Downtown Eastside will require hard work - meeting with residents and community organizations, and developing solutions that work for everyone. If elected, I commit to do this work.

Ken Sim does not work hard. In fact, he barely shows up for work.

He has failed Vancouver. He’s not working for you.”

Background

ABC Vancouver promised to hire 100 nurses. In a City staff report from late 2024, the City indicated that only 12 nurses had been hired - with a target of 14. The other hires are not nurses.

News1130 was told that Ken Sim’s broken campaign promise to hire 100 nurses was just ‘politics’.
